The book should be widely-read and widely appreciated. Evangelical feminism is a huge issue in the church, and Dr. Grudem cogently exposes the danger—a must read. Thanks for the analysis.

Comment on Dr. Bahnsen Debates Atheist Lawyer at University of California, Davis

The summarization listed in this article was first printed in Penpoint Vol 1, January 1994 and posted as a free article on www.cmfnow.com. I would encourage students of apologetics to remember that the primary reason for giving a defense of our faith is not simply to cast down arguments, but to provide a means for evangelism. As Dr. Bahnsen has stated in another article “The very reason why Christians are put in the position of giving a reasoned account of the hope that is in them is that not all men have faith. Because there is a world to be evangelized (men who are unconverted), there is the need for the believer to defend his faith: Evangelism naturally brings one into apologetics. This indicates that apologetics is no mere matter of “intellectual jousting”; it is a serious matter of life and death – eternal life and death”.

Comment on Fridays Q & A

Erik is spot-on. Ray and Kirk should have never surrendered the “high-ground.” By letting the unbelievers set the framework for discussion, they immediately brought it to the level of “your opinion vs. my opinion” and “my logical argument vs. yours.” By so doing you have surrendered to the unbeliever and enabled his rebellion against God and His truth even more (Romans 1, in suppressing the truth in unrighteousness). Since when can we let the lunatics in the asylum determine what is sanity? Apart from humble submission to the only objective viewpoint in this universe, the revelation of God in His Word, we are delusional.

I have appreciated, though, Ray’s use in his WOTM videos the Law of God as it is intended, to show people that they are sinners and stand condemned before a righteous and holy God, and that the only way is Christ Jesus. Maybe Ray (and Kirk) need to re-examine their presuppositions about apologetics [huge pun intended].

Internalization of the gospel (the sacred law of Jesus Christ) must be obtained by individual Christians before the church can be wholly effective in influencing the culture. This internalization begins in the individual through the power of the Holy Spirit, then it will permeate the family, next it will strengthen the church, and finally influence our society. Biblical Dominion at it’s finest!

Though the point still stands that there is great truth and reward by studying and knowing the catechisms.

Comment on Why Study The Shorter Catechism? -- A Commentary

There is a story about D. L. Moody making a visit to Scotland in the 1800’s and opening one of his talks at a local grade school with the rhetorical question, What is prayer? To his amazement, hundreds of children’s hands went up. So he decided to call on a lad near the front, who promptly stood up and said, “Prayer is an offering up of our desires unto God, in the name of Christ, by the help of his Spirit, with confession of our sins, and thankful acknowledgment of his mercies.” This is the answer to question #98 in the Westminster Catechism. To this Moody responded by saying, “Be thankful, son, that you were born in Scotland.”

I too believe that the catechism’s are a critical part of growth for us and our children. It is important for believers to know what they believe and know how to express it. The other importance is giving our children the skills to grow into good doctrine with the knowledge of it before they can even understand it all. I also find them a great source of comfort: (Heidelberg Catechism)
Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death?

A. That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death— to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

Comment on Why Study The Shorter Catechism?

It is often observed that children can memorize a great deal of information. They can quote (at length) words to songs, quotes from their favorite movies, and recite, from memory, every single war ship and commander associated with “Zeno The Earth Destroyer” video game (I made that name up by the way). It is also observed that this “passive” memorization can influence our children’s behavior dramatically. As Christian parents, we should “actively” contribute to the education of our children by catechizing them in the principles and doctrine of our faith. There is no greater joy than hearing the recitation of biblical doctrine from the mouth of our children. I pray that God would grant us the desire, patience, and diligence to catechize our children.

Comment on Of More Than Ordinary Abasement

Philippians 2:1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
